Georgia football: Bulldogs should want LSU, not Alabama, to win SEC West

The Georgia football season took a bit of a blow last week against the LSU Tigers, but it may have been the wake-up call the Dawgs needed.

I’m about to drop some hard, cold facts on Georgia football fans. Sometimes the truth is hard to hear, so fill up your red Solo cups and take a deep breath, Bulldog Nation.

This Georgia team is not built to beat Alabama in the SEC Championship game. Not by a longshot. That’s not to say Georgia isn’t a quality team, but they simply lost too much talent to the NFL after last season and some of the young pups just aren’t quite there.

The Bulldogs were exposed against LSU in Week 7, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. A team sometimes needs to be shown their weaknesses to make the needed corrections. Yes, injuries had a lot to do with the subpar performance by the Dawgs, but so did some questionable play by starting quarterback Jake Fromm and some odd coaching decisions by head coach Kirby Smart and offensive coordinator Jim Chaney.

But all is not lost. It’s just one loss in a long season, and the Bulldogs can still win every remaining game on their schedule. Do that, and they’re still in the SEC Championship Game.

But they don’t want Bama.

Trust me on this, Bulldog fans. You don’t want them.

What the Georgia football team and its fans should want is for is the LSU Tigers to run the table, including a victory over Alabama on November 3, and for Geaux Tigers to be the team heading to Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta for the SEC title game.

Why?

How about 2017. Remember November 11, 2017, when Georgia – who had cruised through most of the season – went into Jordan-Hare Stadium and was absolutely manhandled by Auburn in a 40-17 beating? A few weeks later, the rematch was on in Atlanta, and the Bulldogs flipped the script, annihilating Auburn 28-7 in the SEC Championship Game.

A repeat in 2018 is entirely possible. A healthy (assuming they are by that time) Bulldog team with an idea of what to expect from LSU and a little revenge in mind could come away with a win, a conference title, and a second straight trip to the College Football Playoff.

But you don’t want Bama, Bulldogs. Seriously. Don’t even hope for it.

Have you watched Tua Tagovailoa this season? Mercy. You think what he did to Georgia in the second half of last year’s National Championship Game was hard to watch? He would absolutely shred that Georgia defense this year.

You aren’t going to beat Alabama this year, and a loss this time would spell the end of any playoff hopes.

Tennessee isn’t going to beat Alabama this year. Mississippi State isn’t going to beat Alabama this year. Certainly, the Citadel isn’t going to beat Alabama this year. Even rival Auburn, with all the hype of the Iron Bowl upset potential, isn’t going to beat Alabama this year.

But LSU? That’s a team who has all the pieces in place to pull the upset of the year, and to knock Alabama out of the SEC title game for the second straight season. Think about it…Georgia and LSU, a rematch of the Bulldogs only loss, for all the marbles.

That might be enough to bring Verne Lundquist out of semi-retirement for a week.

So when you aren’t cheering on your Dawgs, you should be shaking some purple and gold pom-poms and breaking out your finest cajun accent, Bulldog Nation. Because you want LSU…not Bama.
