Erislandy Lara fights for the first time since losing to Jarrett Hurd. Brian Carlos Castano will try to prove that he’s a new problem at super welterweight.

Erislandy Lara (25-3-2) is in a position that he’s unfamiliar with—being the challenger. On Saturday, March 2 he attempts to unseat Brian Carlos Castano (15-0, 11 KOs) as the WBA “regular” super welterweight champion.

Lara is used to being a headliner. He was one of the kings of the super welterweight division from 2014-2018 until Jarrett Hurd ended his title reign. The judges’ scorecards had him narrowly losing by split-decision, but Hurd gave him the worst beating of his life.

Lara’s a crafty southpaw whose exquisite boxing skills hypnotize opponents while he picks them apart with scoring punches. He tried to replicate his usual talents against Hurd in 2018, but Hurd’s size and power broke him down over 12 rounds. Lara was cut and knocked down in the final round which sealed his fate.

At 35 years old, Lara wants to prove that he’s still a key player in the super welterweight division. Castano holds the belt that Lara wants. Castano is a titleholder, but his name isn’t well-recognized.

Like Lara, Castano was an amateur standout. He tabulated over 190 amateur bouts and won the South American Games. He’s not very popular outside of his native Argentina, but he might be boxing’s best-kept secret.

Lara still believes he’s one of the best in the world. During Thursday’s press conference Lara stated, “I’m here to win and show everyone that I’m the best 154-pounder in the world. I’m going to take a big step in cleaning out the division on Saturday. I’m going to be at my best and bring home the victory.”

Lara and Castano headline Showtime’s March 2 night of boxing. Their broadcast begins at 9:00 PM ET, but they will have a boxing countdown show streaming on their YouTube event page starting at 6:30 PM ET. Undercard bouts will be streamed until their televised cards appear on Showtime.

Heavyweights Luis Ortiz (30-1, 26 KOs) and Christian Hammer (24-5, 14 KOs) meet in one of the primary undercard bouts. Ortiz is regarded as one of the best heavyweights in the world. He gave WBC champion Deontay Wilder all he could handle in 2018 before Wilder escaped danger and stopped Ortiz in the 10th round.

The continuation of Lara’s career is riding on this fight. Castano is a small super welterweight at 5-foot-6. If he outclasses Lara, then Castano is on his path to stardom while Lara would become an afterthought. This is a high drama fight that will leave a deep impact on both men’s careers.
