The English Premier League has confirmed that they are investigating Manchester City for possible breaches of financial fair play regulations.

The announcement from the Premier League comes a day after UEFA announced it’s own investigation into “several alleged violations” of the financial fair play regulations. Manchester City has claimed that the allegations are “entirely false.”

“The Premier League has previously contacted Manchester City to request information regarding recent allegations and is in ongoing dialogue with the club,” a Premier League statement read. “We are currently investigating these matters and will allow Manchester City every opportunity to explain the context and detail surrounding them.”

The allegations were published by German news magazine Der Spiegel, who obtained leaked documents regarding these events. Manchester City claim that Der Spiegel’s allegations “result from the illegal hacking and out of context publication of City emails.”

Manchester City won the Premier League in the 2017-18 season and are currently seated at the top of the table. They have also made it to the quarterfinals in UEFA’s Champions League, beating out Schalke 04 in the Round of 16. But if the claims are true, they could face an array of punishments, including exclusion from UEFA competitions.

UEFA was previously found to have breached financial fair play rules in 2014.
