The First Four continues tonight in Dayton as a pair of inconsistent power conference teams take the floor hoping to earn a date in the Round of 64 with Buffalo on Friday.

After Belmont and Temple squared off on Tuesday night, another pair of 11-seeds hit the court on Wednesday to see who will earn the final spot in the Round of 64. Arizona State and St. John’s may be from opposite sides of the country, but they have had similar years.

The Sun Devils were the second-best team in a down Pac-12, but wins over Kansas, Mississippi State and Utah State proved to be enough to get Arizona State into the field. Bobby Hurley’s team is led by freshman guard Luguentz Dort, who averages 16.1 points per game, and he has the ability to become an impact player on the next level.

The fact that St. John’s will be taking the floor in Dayton would have been absolutely shocking a month ago, when the Red Storm beat Villanova at Madison Square Garden to improve to 19-7 on the year. St. John’s hit a massive slump down the stretch, losing five of their final seven games, including a 32-point blowout loss to Marquette in the Big East title game.

That defeat nearly knocked the Red Storm out of the tournament, but two prior wins over Marquette combined with the victory over Villanova made St. John’s the last team in the field. The Red Storm will always be a threat due to the presence of guard Shamorie Ponds, who averages 19.5 points per game and is capable of taking over a game on any given night.
