Phil Cofer is not with the team after the death of his father, but he’s on the mind of his Florida State teammates as they play Gonzaga in the Sweet 16.

Florida State is without senior forward Phil Cofer for tonight’s Sweet 16 game vs. Gonzaga after the death of his father Michael last Thursday after a 12-year battle with a rare disease. Cofer is gone but remains on the minds of his teammates, coaches and fans.

Michael Cofer is being honored with a black MC sticker on the jerseys ahead of Saturday’s funeral. Messages for Phil and Michael Cofer are also on the shoes of his teammates.

Cofer is battling an injury so his availability for getting on the court was in question, but there is no question how much he means to his team. Florida State left an open spot on the bench and in their line during the national anthem.

This is a touching tribute for Cofer who despite going through some of the worst time of his life could be comforted knowing his teammates are thinking of him at this time.

Florida State has dedicated the game in Michael Cofer’s honor and is also playing for their teammate who is preparing to bury his father. It’s the love of his teammates and coaches that were around him in the aftermath of hearing the news on the start of the NCAA Tournament.

They’ll be playing with heavy hearts, but also playing for their brother who, should the Seminoles advance, would play on Saturday night, the same day as the funeral.

You can watch Florida State play Gonzaga on CBS.
