The Edmonton Oilers haven’t enjoyed team success this year, but Connor McDavid remains the best player on earth, and he showed why on Thursday.

Connor McDavid is from another planet. At least that must be what the Dallas Stars are thinking after his display on Thursday night.

In the second period of Edmonton’s tilt with Dallas, the Oilers superstar forward deftly handled the puck along the crease’s edge before guiding it between his legs and flipping a shot past Stars goaltender Anton Khudobin. The goal was McDavid’s 40th of the season, giving him 114 points on the campaign.

McDavid and the Oilers are playing out the string up in Alberta, but the highlight reel for No. 97 continues to expand at a rapid pace. Going into the night, McDavid ranked second in points across the National Hockey League, nine points off the pace of Tampa Bay Lightning winger Nikita Kucherov.

Incredibly, Edmonton can’t sniff the playoffs despite having two of the top four point-scorers in the league, with Leon Draisaitl notching 99 (Draisaitl totaled two more points as well on Thursday, giving him 101 for the season).

With McDavid being only 22 years old and Draisaitl at 23, the Oilers have a bright future if the front office can put some talent around them. The offseason will be full of questions about which way the Oil will go, although it’s hard to imaging General Manager Keith Gretzky not addressing the defense. Edmonton entered Thursday night ranked 25th in goals against, allowing 256 on the campaign.

In the meantime, the Oilers have five games remaining, including their home finale on April 4 against the San Jose Sharks.
