The East Region’s Sweet 16 slate kicks off with an intriguing showdown between two power conference champions who are playing for a potential showdown with Zion Williamson and Duke in the Elite Eight.

While most of the crowd heading to Capital One Arena may be waiting for Zion Williamson and Duke to take the floor, the first game of the night in Washington is no slouch. The matchup between LSU and Michigan State features two teams who won regular season titles in two of the strongest conferences in America.

LSU won the SEC in the regular season, but they have looked sluggish since head coach Will Wade was suspended for being caught up in the FBI’s recruiting probe. The Tigers struggled to get by Yale and needed a last-second layup from Tremont Waters to get past 6-seed Maryland to earn their spot in the Sweet 16.

LSU will need to step up their game to take on the Spartans, who won both the regular season title and conference tournament in the deep Big Ten. Michigan State had a massive scare in the first round, struggling with 15-seed Bradley for a long time before advancing into a matchup with conference rival Minnesota.

The Golden Gophers were no match for the Spartans, who blew out their Big Ten brethren by 20 to return to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2015 when they went to the Final Four. Point guard Cassius Winston facilitated a lot of the Michigan State offense, scoring 13 points and picking up nine assists for good measure.

Whoever wins this game may have the mammoth task of trying to take down Duke in the Elite Eight, but both coaches will be sure to emphasize the importance of taking care of the task at hand first.
