Who dies in Avengers: Endgame?

Brace yourself, Avengers: Endgame is just as devastating as you were afraid it would be. Here’s who dies at the end of the Infinity Saga.

If Loki, Gamora and half of all life didn’t cause you enough despair in round three, Avengers: Endgame is sure to bring the loss of even more of your favorite comic book characters. We’ve got you covered on precisely who dies in the fourth installment of the Avengers series, whether you need reminding because you missed a few through the tears or can’t handle the genuine shock of watching it go down in real-time.

So, yes, there will be spoilers down below in this post. In case that wasn’t obvious enough from the title including the word “dies.”

Heading into Avengers: Endgame, we knew the stakes were high. Many of our beloved CGI friends were already in somewhat of a plot-based purgatory until the rest of the heroes could save them from Thanos’ Infinity Stone-powered ethnic cleansing. Others, such as Iron Man and Captain America, were expected to be on the ropes as the actors who play them depart from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Many more still were expected to be in danger because, well, Disney wants you back in the theater three years from now to see the next one of these damned things.

So without further ado, and one more spoiler warning for good measure, let’s sift through the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame to see where the chips have fallen for our friends.

First, who is still dead: Even after the snap, Loki is dead. He wasn’t snapped away, he died in Infinity War. Gamora is a little more tricky. The version of her in Infinity War is dead, but the Gamora from the 2014 timeline sticks around in the present timeline and will be the one you see in future Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

Now, who was living at the start of Endgame but not on the otherside? That would be Natasha Romanova (Black Widow), who sacrifices herself so the team can acquire the Soul stone. She and Hawkeye fight over who will be the one to die. (If you’re confused because of the Black Widow solo feature, remember that will be an origin story.) And then big one: Tony Stark. Stark, too, sacrifices himself, snapping Thanos and his army away with his Infinity-Stone-enabled suit but killing himself in the process.

As for Captain America, Steve Rogers decides to stay in the past, but he’s very much alive, so that’s a small comfort.
