Draftkings NFL GPP pivots: GPP strategy

Each week I am going to give you a few tips on roster construction. Each slate is different, but there are always ways to make your builds different while still playing optimal plays. You can find my GPP strategy guide here if you want to read more about correlation, players to target, etc…

Last week we saw some chalky running backs go off for big games with Chris Carson and Dalvin Cook both scoring two TDs for their respective teams. We also saw a number of cheap receivers (Sammy Watkins, John Ross III, D.J. Chark, John Brown, Michael Gallup, Marquise Brown, and Tyrell Williams) have huge games while some of the higher-priced options like Julio Jones and Mike Evans struggled.

Like I mentioned in my “quick hitters” article on Tuesday, only three running backs had 20 or more carries week one which is going to drive ownership to those few “bell cow” backs. We also usually see three backs being utilized by the majority of DFS players both in cash games and GPPs so keep that in mind if you want to be different by going with a fourth receiver or a second tight end in your FLEX spot.

One quick strategy that I want to discuss quickly is targeting games with lower Vegas totals for game stacks. Now, when I saw “lower” I mean games that are somewhere in the middle of the pack, I’m not necessarily aiming for the lowest total games.

This week, for example, we have the Chiefs-Raiders game with a 52.5 total and the Saints-Rams game with a 52 total. Both of these games are going to be popular games to stack up in GPPs and we should see a lot of the players from those two teams in cash game lineups, too. However, there are a couple of games that are also very attractive for stacking that are flying under the radar.

The Cowboys-Redskins game is now sitting at 47.5 and has increased 2.5 points since it opened. Dallas scored 35 points week 1 and Washington scored 32 points, so this game could definitely shoot out. Meanwhile, the Cardinals-Ravens game has crept up to a 46 point total, which is an increase of 3 points since it opened. Many players might avoid this game as the Ravens are 13.5 favorites, but we saw the Cardinals offense wake up late in their game against Detroit last weekend. The Bengals-49ers game is also sitting at 46 points but is only a one-point spread and is another solid option for game stacks.
