2. Dayton vs. Gonzaga – National Championship Game

We almost never get to see two mid-major schools play at an elite level, so imagine if Gonzaga and Dayton reached the national championship game. This scenario would set up a first-time champion as well, with each program having been a runner-up once (Dayton all the way back in 1967 and Gonzaga as recently as 2017).

There is also plenty of star power in this matchup, with Dayton’s Obi Toppin set to square off with Gonzaga’s Filip Petrusev and Killian Tillie. This matchup would have been a win for small schools everywhere, but it will not happen this year.

1. Baylor vs. Kansas – National Championship Game

The other potentially fantastic showdown for the title would be the third meeting of the year between Kansas and Baylor. These two Big 12 rivals were evenly matched throughout the year, and their first two games featured some truly breathtaking basketball.

Baylor drew first blood by winning at the Phog by a dozen in January, but Kansas responded with a three-point win in Waco to snap the Bears’ 23-game winning streak. A third matchup for all the marbles would have been epic theater, and perhaps in a mirror universe, we would be riveted by every big bucket from Devon Dotson, Jared Butler and the Jayhawks. That won’t come to pass, however, and that is truly a shame.
