College football is all about the fans. That may be true, but we could be in for a super weird 2020 NCAA season featuring games where no fans are present.

What’s a college football season without fans?

Well, given the state of the world we’re now living in, that could be a possibility. According to Stadium’s Brett McMurphy, who tweeted Big 12 commissioner, Bob Bowlsby said there is a chance football games could be played this fall without fans in the stadium while admitting it’s tough to forecast that far in advance.

Of all the sports being affected by the coronavirus, not having fans watching college football games would be beyond devastating. Professional sports have their rabid fanbases too, but college athletics playing games without fans, especially college football games, just feels wrong.

There’s such a strong attachment to one’s alma mater or the big school down the road in Middle America. You may have a favorite team you like to watch on Sundays, but it has always meant a little more on Fall Saturdays across the United States. We may get out of this in time for fall sports to be back to normal, but we just don’t know right now.

North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Mack Brown expressed concerns about his coaching counterparts feel about all this. These are uncertain times, as we’re in the midst of a pandemic unlike anything we’ve ever seen in our collective lifetimes.

Pro and college football seasons are the two North American sports that have been the least affected by this virus. NFL free agency went off without a hitch, but the NFL Draft won’t be the television spectacle we were all hoping for in Las Vegas. All winter and spring sports have been canceled for the rest of the academic year in college. Losing football next fall would be brutal.

If things return to something close to normal in the next few weeks, perhaps we will get football season as we normally would. If we have to watch games being played in empty stadiums, we’ll have to make do with that. But it would feel so wrong. These students only get so many Fall Saturdays to play in front of the home crowd. Denying them that would stink, but it could happen.
