5 teams that should make an offer for Odell Beckham Jr.
3. Indianapolis Colts
The Colts pushed some chips into the middle of their 2020 table by signing Philip Rivers to a one-year deal, and they seem ready to quickly rise back up after a 7-9 campaign last year.
T.Y. Hilton is a very good receiver, but after that things get a little thin (Parris Campbell, Zach Pascal, Marcus Johnson). This is where I say a historically deep draft class at wide receiver will create a chance to add a difference maker with a Day 2 pick. But the Colts have the cap space (over $24 million) to take Beckham’s $14.25 million for this year, and they can still draft a wide receiver with a greater eye on the future.
When the Colts were connected to free agent running back Le’Veon Bell a little over a year ago, general manager Chris Ballard suggested he’d be hesitant to upset a harmonious locker room. Beckham is a walking distraction to a level few players are, but he would fill a real void for the Colts in a way Bell would not have (leaving aside the level of multi-year investment).
Beckham’s contract is easy to get out of after this year, and he should be plenty motivated after last year’s debacle. The Colts should be willing to take on a bit of risk, unique as it is with Beckham, and bet on huge upside in a one-year window with no necessary commitment to him after that.
