5 Los Angeles Chargers who need to be great in 2020
2. QB Tyrod Taylor
After their pursuit of Tom Brady went right to the end and fell short, the Chargers professed their commitment to Taylor as the starting quarterback this year. They were easy to tie to Cam Newton, but that didn’t happen and the Chargers did draft Justin Herbert as their prospective quarterback of the future.
Taylor is not an elite quarterback, but to suggest he’s not a good quarterback is selling him short. He started 43 games over three seasons (2015-2017) with the Buffalo Bills, and played solidly over that span (62.6 percent completion rate, 51 touchdowns passes, 16 interceptions, 7.2 yards per attempt). And don’t forget about his running ability, with 1,575 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground over those three seasons,
With the skill position talent they have, the Chargers don’t necessarily need a transcendent star under center. If Taylor can make the right plays, avoid significant turnovers and add something with his legs when those opportunities come, his role is akin to simply not crashing the car and his performance will be great in that light. He’s not a buzz-worthy player, but Taylor can absolutely be the right quarterback for the Chargers as they look primed for a rebound this year.
