Cam Newton reminds everyone that he’s not a backup quarterback

Sleeping on Cam Newton would be a deadly mistake, and the former MVP himself is out here putting in work to make sure nobody has a chance to forget about him.

Cam Newton’s case is a strange one. It would figure to be impossible for a Heisman Trophy-winning national champion quarterback who went on to go No. 1 overall in the NFL Draft, win a league MVP trophy, and play in the Super Bowl to ever fly under the radar, but such a thing has truly happened.

After being cut loose by the Carolina Panthers in the wake of a nagging foot injury, he’s back on the open market for the first time since he finished swallowing JUCO opponents whole at Blinn College. And based on the latest evidence on Instagram, any NFL team that opts to sign him had better not commit the sin of considering him a backup quarterback.

Does this man look hobbled? We don’t know what a “Lisfranc fracture” is — NOBODY DOES, FOR IT IS A CONSPIRACY — but you can’t look at Cam putting in work and zipping balls around like laser-guided bombs from an F-117 Nighthawk and bandy him about as some kind of insurance option in case, I dunno, Jarrett Stidham gets hurt?

Forget about it.

Cam has all the leverage here if he chooses to believe that he does. It’s his prerogative to choose to remain unsigned right up into the preseason, as there’s quite a great chance that more than a few teams will worriedly realize that their best-laid plans under center are a looming disaster.

If and when that happens, there’s a possible future Hall of Famer out there ready to snag the reins and not look back.
