After a recent workout video proved he’s healthy, the New England Patriots should reconsider signing Cam Newton.

It’s mid-May and the Patriots are still convincing anyone who will listen that they’re rolling with Jarrett Stidham at the quarterback position heading into Training Camp. The sheer absurdity of that statement is why it’s tough to believe them.

A now-healthy Cam Newton remains on the free agent market, and as his recent workout video documents, he’s moving around the pocket without any sign of his past shoulder and foot injuries.

The Patriots quarterback room currently consists of Stidham, Brian Hoyer and Brian Lewerke. Bill Belichick would be wise to bring in another veteran presence in Cam to at least push the younger Stidham, assuming his stubborn nature doesn’t get in the way.

Yes, despite being the greatest coach of all-time, Belichick’s ego could get in his way. He’s eager to prove it was he — not Tom Brady — who was responsible for New England’s success, and he’s willing to take another chance on a late-round draft pick to do so. Yet, signing a former MVP desperate for a second chance could provide a Hollywood ending of its own.

Newton’s workout video should be taken with a grain of salt, but we’ve seen enough content out of his camp to suggest he’s worthy of a tryout when the time comes. The COVID-19 pandemic makes this all the more difficult, but considering the Patriots would be Newton’s only real chance at the starting job, he ought to put a pin in them until NFL facilities are up and running.

The longer Cam waits, the better, and the pressure is only beginning to mount on Belichick, who will be hard-pressed to rely on his unproven Auburn product come Week 1.
