“Iron Mike” is officially coming out of retirement

Legendary boxer “Iron” Mike Tyson opened the eyes of the combat sports world with recent releases of his workout footage. Once you watch in awe, you can see that Tyson might very well have some gas left in the tank. As it turns out, Tyson already has his first post-retirement fight booked.

According to Yahoo Sports’ Kevin Iole, Tyson is officially coming out of retirement to face Roy Jones Jr. in an eight-round exhibition fight at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Cali. The super-fight will take place on Sept. 12 and will be broadcasted on pay per view and the multimedia platform Thriller.

Additionally, Thriller will air a ten-part docuseries leading up to the fight.

Battle of the 50-year-olds

The reason for Tyson coming out of retirement is to promote his Legends Only League, which will allow legendary athletes of all sports to relive their glory days in various events. To be specific, Tyson listed baseball, basketball, and soccer.

Tyson, 54, hasn’t stepped inside the square circle (besides his All Elite Wrestling appearance earlier this year) since 2005, where he lost by corner retirement to Kevin McBride in after six rounds. As for Jones, 51, he last fought back in 2018, where he defeated Scott Sigmon by unanimous decision to win the World Boxing Union (WBU) cruiserweight title.

Yes, a fight between two legendary boxers in their early 50’s sounds like a recipe for disaster. But come on, you’d dish out your hard earned paycheck to watch “Iron” Mike throw some jabs and land some body blows in the middle of a ring!
