Patrick Mahomes will have his tight end Travis Kelce for six more years.

Travis Kelce isn’t going anywhere and Patrick Mahomes could not be more excited about it.

In the same day that George Kittle got his mega extension with the San Francisco 49ers, the Kansas City Chiefs were able to extend their perennial Pro Bowl tight for four more seasons. Kelce was under contract through the 2021 NFL season, but now will remain with the team through the 2025 campaign. He’ll be in his mid-30s by then. Kelce will now be a Chief for life.

Mahomes, who is well on his way to becoming a billionaire, has the arguably the best tight end in football to throw to for the next six seasons. He took to Twitter on Thursday to let the world know just how excited he was that Kelce won’t be playing for anyone else anytime soon. Hopefully, they can crush some cold Coors Lights six feet away from each other to celebrate.

How many more Super Bowls will the Chiefs win in the next six years?

The only person who gets more excited about six more years of something is an incumbent United States Senator getting re-elected. So with Mahomes being able to throw footballs in Kelce’s direction through the 2025 NFL season, how many more Super Bowls must Kansas City win for this contract extension to have been a worthwhile endeavor?

With Mahomes winning his first Super Bowl before his 25th birthday, he should be able to hoist at least two more Lombardi Trophies and three more Lamar Hunt Trophies before he fully exits his prime. Approaching Tom Brady’s six Super Bowl rings is possible, but anything short of matching Troy Aikman’s three would be a disappointment for Mahomes’ professional football career.

As for through the 2025 NFL season, Kansas City should probably win two additional Super Bowls in the next six seasons. Gaining one more Lombardi Trophy before Kelce’s extension runs its course would still make the extension worthwhile. However, if the Chiefs do not win another Super Bowl in the next six years, it will be a crushing blow for all members of Chiefs Kingdom.

The Chiefs are gearing up to be a dynasty, but no team has repeated as Super Bowl champs since the 2003-04 New England Patriots pulled it off nearly two decades ago. For that reason, Kansas City may not win Super Bowl 55 down in Tampa in February, strictly because it’s such a difficult endeavor to pull off going back-to-back. However, Mahomes should win two more before he’s 30.

Mahomes and Kelce can celebrate all day, but they must climb back up the mountain in 2020.
