The Los Angeles Dodgers ace surprised students at his annual back to school event.
We’re currently living in unprecedented times due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which has curtailed nearly every annual event. But leave it to Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw to adapt to the changes.
Every year, Kershaw’s challenge hosts a Back to School Bash, with the help of the Dream Center of Los Angeles, the Dodgers and the Dodgers Foundation. Kershaw provided 3,700 pre-registered students with backpacks filled with school supplies, food boxes, face masks, sunscreen and hygiene supplies on Saturday. Given that social distancing is of the utmost priority right, the seventh annual event was transformed into a drive-thru at Dodger Stadium, where students can get their supplies from the comfort of their car.
Kershaw took things a step further, as children had the chance to video chat with the star pitcher and his family at the event!
Kershaw adapting with the times
Even with the pandemic going on, Kershaw ensured that students continued to receive the necessary supplies for the upcoming school year. Kershaw is so passionate about the event, that he and his wife, Ellen, watched the entire event via a Zoom call. That was where Kershaw got to greet the students as they picked up their backpacks.
Kershaw wasn’t the only member of the Dodgers to help those in need this week. Outfielder Mookie Betts is teaming up with the Dodgers Foundation to host a giveaway at Compton Town Center this Sunday. At the event, Betts will supply individuals with free reusable masks, hand sanitizer, food boxes and health screenings. Additionally, the event will feature voter registration services to ensure all Compton citizens are ready for the U.S. general election on Nov. 3.
Speaking of the election, the Dodgers and Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James teamed up to make Dodger Stadium a polling place to ensure everyone has the opportunity to vote.
The Dodgers are a great team on the field, but they’re even greater off of it with their countless acts of bettering the community.
