Some rough news has come in for Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney, as 2020 five-star signee Demarkcus Bowman has entered the transfer portal.

When five-star running back DeMarkcus Bowman surprisingly signed with Clemson over Florida as part of the 2020 class, Tigers fans everywhere dreamed of him having an incredible career in the ACC for Dabo Swinney. Now, it’s looking like his days donning a Clemson uniform are already over.

Per a report, the 5-foot-10, 190-pound speedster has entered the transfer portal, according to Matt Zenitz of Al.com. This news has come seemingly out of nowhere too, especially after Clemson started off the season 2-0 with wins over Wake Forest and The Citadel.

Bowman was third on the team in rushing with nine carries for 32 yards. Swinney compared the talented freshman to former Clemson star C.J. Spiller. He was being counted on being the heir apparent to Travis Etienne after he leaves for the NFL after this season.

Demarkcus Bowman signed with the Clemson Tigers as one of the highest-ranked running backs in the country

When Bowman inked with the Tigers, he did so ranked as the No. 20 recruit overall and No. 3 running back in the country per the 247Sports Composite. He had offers from Clemson, Florida, Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, Georgia, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oregon and several others, but this was always a battle between Clemson and the Gators.

Being a Lakeland, Fla., product, Bowman took a pair of unofficial visits to Gainesville to check out the campus and meet with the coaches. However, an official visit to Clemson on Jan. 17 appeared to send things over the top in favor of the ACC powers. With Bowman now entering the transfer portal and getting ready to look for a new home, Florida is most certainly a team to watch for where he might end up next.

While a player who enters the transfer portal has the opportunity to remove their name and end up returning to their original program, it’s not often that ends up happening. In fact, 247Sports reports Clemson has already canceled Bowman’s financial aid after he entered the portal.

For Gators fans who were heartbroken over losing Bowman, this story might have a happy ending for you after all. For the Tigers faithful, though, they’ll be shaking their heads at how things ended up playing out here as they try to win another national championship.
