Is this the beginning of the end for Josh Allen’s epic run?

Josh Allen’s best drive on Monday came in the fourth quarter and under the pressure of critics. Going 5-of-5 for 56 yards and tacking on a pair of penalties, the third-year Buffalo Bills star connected with Cole Beasley to for an 8-yard touchdown, leaving his team down by a touchdown.

A field goal and two plays later, the game was over. Allen threw a short pass right into the hands of Daniel Sorensen, cementing the 26-17 victory for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Allen, who’s made his case for “most improved player” entering Monday’s showdown, showed flashes in his first two seasons after being drafted out of Wyoming. Once again, flashes were the storyline against the Kansas City defense, while Patrick Mahomes continued to play at a near-flawless level.

Defeating the Chiefs (5-1) is no easy task for any franchise, but the Bills (4-2) continue to keep their name in the mix for a chance at the AFC’s top seed. Allen, however, will have to be the difference-maker for a club that’s heavily relied on their defensive identity.

Questions are now back on Allen. Was this a struggle game, or did the clock strike midnight on Buffalo’s Prince Charming?

Should Bills fans be worried about Josh Allen following Monday’s outing?

Last week in the team’s 42-16 loss to the Titans, Allen threw for season lows in passing yards (263), completion percentage (63.4) and a QBR rating of 63.0. That’s actually a fond memory following Monday’s regression to 122 yards, two touchdowns and a completion percentage of 51.8 percent.

The weather rattled back and forth between slanting wind and heavy rain, thus affecting Allen’s trajectory. The Bills’ longest play of the night came on a 22-yard strike to Beasley in the fourth. Outside of that, Buffalo had four connections for more than 10 yards, with none going over 14.

Yes, the rain was a concern, but not a deal-breaker. In the same circumstances, Mahomes threw for 225 yards, two touchdowns and finished with a completion rating of 80.7 percent. Both quarterbacks struggled to connect deep, but Mahomes’ 37-yard completion to Byron Pringle to set up the game-sealing field goal from Harrison Butker ultimately swung the line in favor of the former MVP.

There was also the differential in the run game. Clyde Edwards-Helaire finished with 161 yards as the Chiefs’ leading rusher while Darrell Williams scored a touchdown. Allen led the Bills on the ground with 42 yards, while Devin Singletary and Zach Moss combined for the same yardage as their quarterback.

Kansas City’s secondary made leaps over the past two seasons with Steve Spagnuolo calling the shots. Prior to Monday’s showdown in Orchard Park, Chiefs ranked 11th in yards allowed per game (225.2) and third in completion rating (61.5 percent).

Back-to-back subpar games from Allen won’t make him a dud, but there are concerns. As the weather in Buffalo begins to change, can he keep up the pace without a strong running game? Last season in the team’s final eight games, Allen only completed more than 70 percent of his passes once and never threw for more 266 passing yards.

The Bills are far from out of AFC contention, but maybe it’s time to cool the MVP talks with the young gunslinger. The 2020 season might be proving some doubters wrong, but Allen is far from a finished product and further away from the league’s top player.
