The San Francisco 49ers’ season is teetering on the brink of disaster after the George Kittle injury.

The injury bug has hit the San Francisco 49ers hard in the 2020 season, as they stand in last place in the division with a 4-4 record following injuries to just about anyone with a pulse on offense. Because the football gods are still angry at San Francisco, they decided to likely take away their best player on either side of the ball for most of the remaining 2020 season.

49ers tight end George Kittle is expected to miss eight weeks due to a small fracture in his foot. This injury will sideline one of the best tight ends in football for almost the entire 2020 season.

George Kittle might be the best tight end in the league

Kittle, who set the record for receiving yards in a season by a tight end, has been his usual, dominant self this season, averaging six catches and 79 yards per game despite leaving two games early due to injury.

The 49ers are cautiously optimistic that tight end Jordan Reed can come off of injured reserve in time for either Week 9 against the Green Bay Packers or Week 10 against the New Orleans Saints. If he is unable to get healthy in time for those games, look for Ross Dwelley, who saw extended action against the Seattle Seahawks last week, to take the majority of the snaps.

The 49ers have the misfortune of playing in the ultra-tough NFC West, and losing both a starting quarterback in Jimmy Garoppolo and arguably the league’s best tight end in Kittle might be too much for Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers’ JV team to overcome. The defending champions have a difficult road to the postseason, and it’ll get even harder without Kittle.
