Javon Wims will appeal his suspension, but it doesn’t look good

The NFL suspended Wims two games for the fight he started with New Orleans Saints defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson on Sunday. Wims stole Gardner-Johnson’s mouthguard, and then punched him in the helmet, starting what amounted to an all-out brawl on the field. The fight wouldn’t help the Bears chances against New Orleans, either, as the Saints went on to win in overtime despite Nick Foles’ best efforts.

On Monday, Wims suspension was announced as well as his own decision to appeal the process. Wims defense of his own actions is unknown at this time, but he faces an uphill battle to convince Roger Goodell that he deserves anything less than the severe punishment handed down by the powers that be.

Wims claims that Gardner-Johnson started the incident

The Georgia product said his former college rival spit in his direction and tried to take out his mouthpiece. Gardner-Johnson denied this in a statement postgame.

“It ain’t got nothing to do with me,” Gardner-Johnson said Monday, per ESPN. “If he’s acting out, that’s on him. It wasn’t no incident. We won the game. I mean, everybody, it’s a lot of he said, he said. Ain’t nothing happened. Nobody got spit on. Shouldn’t be nowhere near the field of play when the game’s going on. So I ain’t answering no more questions about that.”

Gardner-Johnson took a shot at Wims postgame via Instagram, and that appears to be the end of this spat turned verbal. Still, this isn’t even the first time this season that Gardner-Johnson was involved in an on-field disagreement. The first took place in practice with wide receiver Michael Thomas, who took issue with Gardner-Johnson and hasn’t seen the field since.
