Diego Maradona tributes from Messi, Napoli and the rest of the world

Diego Maradona was remembered by teams and players across the globe, including Lionel Messi, in his native Argentina and at Italian club Napoli.

Less than a week after his death at age 60, teams and players from across the globe paid tribute to the memory and legacy of soccer superstar Diego Maradona.

The famous No. 10, who helped Argentina win the 1986 World Cup, was remembered in his homeland and in Naples and throughout Italy’s Serie A, where he played the best club soccer of his career.

This weekend’s matches throughout the world started with a minute of silence to remember Maradona, who died last Wednesday of a heart attack.

Leading the tributes was his countryman Lionel Messi and Barcelona, where Maradona also played in the early-80s.

Messi revealed a Newell’s Old Boys jersey after scoring a wonderful second-half goal in Barcelona’s 4-0 rout on Sunday against Osasuna. He then blew a kiss with both hands as he looked up to the sky.

Over in Italy, Napoli also won 4-0 against Roma at the Stadio San Paolo. Napoli players wore a blue-and-white jersey that resembled that of Argentina in honor of their former captain. Maradona led Napoli to a league title in 1987 and 1990.

Italy star Lorenzo Insigne paid tribute to Maradona after his goal, running to the sideline to display and kiss a Napoli jersey with Maradona’s name and number on the back.

In Argentina, games were filled with displays of affection for Maradona. In Buenos Aires, Maradona’s daughter Dalma was overcome with emotion after Boca Juniors, where Maradona also once played and continued to be a big fan, scored their first goal in what turned out to be a 2-0 win against Newell’s at La Bombonera.

On Saturday, the club Maradona coached at the time of his death, Gimnasia y Esgrima, players took to the field wearing the No. 10 on their backs and chanted his name in the dressing room after their 1-0 win against Velez Sarsfield.

Even in MLS, players took the time to remember Maradona. The New England Revolution’s Gustavo Bou honored him after scoring a first-half goal on Sunday in the Eastern Conference Semifinals against Orlando City SC. The Revs advanced with a 3-1 win.

Maradona may be gone, but this weekend’s displays are proof he won’t be forgotten.
