Johnny Manziel took some extra cash while he was at Texas A&M.

Johnny Manziel was the truest essence of a football supernova, as he burned extremely bright for a two-year span, then faded into anonymity. While his statistical prowess at Texas A&M still makes him one of the best quarterbacks to ever play in the SEC, Manziel’s antics off the field drew almost as much attention. Manziel, who was suspended for agreeing to autograph signings for s five-figure fee, confirmed that he did get some cash sent his way here and there in College Station.

In an appearance on the YNK: You Know What I Mean? podcast, Manziel confirmed he used to receive at least a $700 monthly stipend check at A&M and was offered as much as $5,000 in one sitting.

Manziel became the first player to win the Heisman Trophy as a freshman in his first season as a starter with the Aggies. He piled up 47 touchdowns, 21 of which came on the ground, during that season. While his off-field antics became as synonymous with him as his scrambling ability, his college production convinced the Cleveland Browns to pick him 22nd overall in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Ultimately, a lack of focus paired with poor pocket presence prevented Manziel from making good on his promise to “wreck this league,” and he totaled just seven touchdown passes against seven interceptions in two seasons before fading out of the league.

Manziel might not be remembered fondly for what he did off the field over the last decade or in the field in Cleveland, but he will remain a deity in College Station for those two magical seasons. However, as confirmed by the man himself, he wasn’t out there shredding SEC defenses for free.
