Baylor and Gonzaga face off in a 1 vs. 2 showdown in Indianapolis.

Editor’s Note: Baylor and Gonzaga have mutually agreed to cancel the game.

One of the most anticipated games of the college basketball season is finally here. The top two teams in the AP’s preseason poll, Gonzaga and Baylor, are off to a combined 6-0 start as they square off in Indianapolis today for the title of college basketball’s best team.

The Bulldogs have assembled perhaps the greatest collection of talent that Mark Few has ever coached for Gonzaga, adding impact freshman Jalen Suggs and Florida transfer Andrew Nembhard to a loaded roster. Those two teamed with returners Drew Timme, Corey Kispert, and Joel Ayayi to help Gonzaga outlast West Virginia in the Jimmy V Classic.

This showdown of two of the nation’s most exciting teams also is a tremendous opportunity for Baylor to show off their chops. The Bears returned pretty much everyone from last year’s 26-4 team, including Big 12 Player of the Year candidate Jared Butler, who has averaged 16.3 points per game over Baylor’s first three games of the season.

Baylor is coming off another Top 5 matchup, a convincing 82-69 win over Illinois in the nightcap of the Jimmy V Classic. Four different players scored in double figures for the Bears, including 12 for Butler and a game-high 18 off the bench for Adam Flagler.

These teams both average over 90 points per game so this contest should be a fun shootout in Indy. The Bulldogs possess more top-shelf talent in the matchup but Baylor is the rare squad that is deep enough to withstand all of the options that Gonzaga can bring to the table. In a matchup of two teams that play very similar styles of basketball, this contest should come down to whichever team can avoid mistakes and turnovers.
