UNC football set an FBS record by dominating Miami football on the ground.

A commitment to the run was key for No. 17 UNC football to upset No. 10 Miami football.

It may have been a game featuring two ranked opponents, but most people thought the Miami Hurricanes would take care of business at home vs. the visiting North Carolina Tar Heels. Too bad UNC running backs Michael Carter and Javonte Williams combined to set an FBS record for most rushing yards by a pair of teammates in a game. They amassed an astonishing 544 yards together with a game-high 308 for Carter and 236 for Williams.

North Carolina now has an outside shot at making a New Year’s Six bowl

Carter had a phenomenal game vs. Miami. Not only did he have 24 carries for 308 yards and two touchdowns, but he also mocked “The U” on this touchdown celebration. Williams had 23 carries for 236 yards and three rushing touchdowns. This allowed Mack Brown’s team to demolish the ‘Canes to the tune of 62-26 at Hard Rock Stadium. Nobody saw this blowout in Miami coming.

This loss for Miami is devastating, as it will knock them out of the top 10 in next week’s College Football Playoff rankings. To make things even worse, it may prevent them from getting to a New Year’s Six bowl. If the Clemson Tigers and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish were to both qualify for the College Football Playoff, maybe it will be the Tar Heels who will be playing in the Orange Bowl?

Carter and Williams illustrate why North Carolina has re-emerged as a contender under Brown.
