Justin Fields took a huge shot and a huge lead into halftime of the Sugar Bowl.

Though the Buckeyes took a 35-14 lead into halftime, Ohio State football fans are worried about the status of their star quarterback Justin Fields.

He took a huge hit from Clemson Tigers linebacker James Skalski late in the first half. Skalski was ejected for targeting on the play. Though Fields laid on the ground for a minute there, he was able to keep playing for the rest of the half, helping extend the lead over the favored Tigers in the Sugar Bowl. If Fields cannot complete this game, who is his backup quarterback?

Who is Justin Fields’ backup quarterback?

There are two quarterbacks who could see some action if Fields cannot finish the game. It would be a pair of true freshman in Jack Miller III and C.J. Stroud. Miller is 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds. He was a four-star recruit out of Scottsdale, Arizona. Stroud is 6-foot-2.5 and 194 pounds. He was a four-star recruit out of Rancho Cucamonga, California. Again, neither have very much experience.

If Fields can continue to play through pain, then Ohio State has a fantastic shot of getting back to the national championship game for the first time since winning it all back in 2014. However, if Fields cannot play very much at all in the second half, it leaves the door wide open for Clemson star quarterback Trevor Lawrence to take over and lead his team to the title bout.

Let’s hope Fields did not get injured too bad on Skalski’s punishing tackle of him.
