Former Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops is a fan of Sooners quarterback Spencer Rattler.

Even though he never played for him, former Oklahoma football head coach Bob Stoops new his program was getting an unbelievable player at the quarterback position in Spencer Rattler.

The former five-star recruit from Phoenix is coming off his first season as the Sooners starter. While Oklahoma missed out on the College Football Playoff, the Sooners won the Big 12 for the sixth year in a row. Rattler seemed to get better with every start in Lincoln Riley’s offense. Here is what Stoops said about Rattler to his FOX colleague Colin Cowherd on his radio show Thursday.

“Great release, great arm,” said Stoops on The Herd with Colin Cowherd. “He has the ability to throw the ball at any angle and he’s got a really quick release, and very accurate. He committed to OU when I was there.”

“He committed young, I want to say his sophomore or junior year and then I stepped away, but of course, Lincoln had the best relationship with him and he stayed with us, knowing Lincoln was going to be his guy and was going to be his quarterback coach and head coach.”

Though Stoops is a former defensive back and a defensive-minded head coach, Cowherd was impressed that he brought the Air Raid attack with him to Norman in the early 2000s. Stoops said it was because he hated playing Hal Mumme, Mike Leach and the rest of the Kentucky Wildcats offense when he was the defensive coordinator under Steve Spurrier during his time at Florida.

In the last two decades, Oklahoma has become synonymous with Heisman Trophy quarterbacks. Four OU signal-callers have won the award and several others have been finalists for it. If all goes according to plan, Rattler can join the exclusive brotherhood of Oklahoma Heisman winners, as he is the favorite to win it this year. If he plays like he can, he might be the No. 1 overall pick in 2022.

For now, Rattle is battling UNC’s Sam Howell for the best potential quarterback draft prospect.
