The 2021 Stanley Cup Final officially begins, as the underdog Montreal Canadiens take on the defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning.

The NHL started off the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs with 16 teams, but now are down to two squads. The defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning look to run it back, but will have to fend off a tough underdog in the Montreal Canadiens.

Montreal’s run to the Final is nothing short of magical. They were on the brink of elimination, down 3-1 in the series against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Yet, they won the final three games in the series to advance to the next round, where they swept the Winnipeg Jets. Then, the Canadiens defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in six games to advance to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1993. That was also the last time they hoisted Lord Stanley’s Cup after beating the Los Angeles Kings.

Tampa Bay’s quest to repeat as champions started off with a grueling battle against the in-state rival Florida Panthers in the first-round. From there, they eliminated the Carolina Hurricanes in five games, before having to fight tooth and nail to get past the New York Islanders in seven games in the semifinals.
