Patrick Konrad won his third solo stage win but first Tour stage on July 13 at the 108th Tour de France.

Patrick Konrad broke away early on in the race and then distanced his breakaway companions to win Stage 16 of Tour de France with a massive solo effort on July 13.

The stage from Le Pas de la Casa (Andorra) to Saint-Gaudens included the descent on the Col de Portet d’Aspet where Italian rider Fabio Casartelli crashed and died on July 18, 1995 during the 15th Stage of the Tour de France.

Patrick Konrad’s massive solo effort stage win

Despite two different groups of chasers that eventually grouped together, Konrad left them all behind to win his third solo stage win but first Tour stage win.

He rode an average of 44 kilometers per hour in the last few kilometers but had an average of 77 kilometers per hour on the descents.

It is also his first win outside his native Austria.

He came in to assist Bora-Hansgrohe teammate Wilco Kelderman in the mountains but both he and Nils Politt ended making massive solo efforts to win stages.

Kelderman and other general classification contenders ended up in another breakaway from the peloton ten minutes behind the stage win to try and gain time on each other.

It ended up not making much difference to the general classification standings.
