During the Kansas City Chiefs’ preseason opener against the 49ers, these three players clinched a 53-man roster spot.

For the Kansas City Chiefs’ preseason opener against the San Francisco 49ers, the debut of 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance drove the anticipation (and he did not disappoint). The Chiefs rested key guys, as most teams did in their first preseason game.

The back-to-back AFC champions simply don’t have a lot of final roster spots in real question. How roles are filled is a bigger question as the rest of camp and preseason goes on, and those dynamics will play out in time.

That being said, these three players clinched a spot on the Chiefs roster in the preseason opener.

3. WR Daurice Fountain

Fountain has been a training camp surprise, and he followed with a big role in the first preseason game (four catches for 38 yards on six targets; all team-highs). He also had a 21-yard kickoff return.

At first glance Fountain, a third-year man out of Northern Iowa, is buried on the Chiefs’ wide receiver depth chart. But rookie Cornell Powell is on the roster bubble, and there are only four others (Tyreek Hill, Mecole Hardman, Byron Pringle, Demarcus Robinson) locked into roster spots.

Fountain wouldn’t be in line for a huge role if he sticks. But he absolutely already pushed himself into a final roster spot heading into Week 1 with his showing against the 49ers.
