New York Yankees announcer John Sterling’s life was in jeopardy in the follow-up of the Hurricane Ida floods in the New York metro area.

According to Michael Kay, Sterling was rescued by fellow Yankees radio announcer Rickie Ricardo, who broadcasts the team’s games in Spanish. Ricardo was informed of Sterling’s whereabouts by Suzyn Waldman, who works alongside Sterling in the booth.

Thankfully, Ricardo drives a Jeep and was able to drive Sterling to safety. Sterling tried to drive through the floods, which very nearly cost him.

Much of Manhattan and the surrounding area, including New Jersey, ended up under water due to flooding from remnants of Hurricane Ida.

Even Yankee Stadium, as well as TD Bank Ball Park in Somerset, NJ, home to the team’s minor-league affiliate, fell to massive flooding.

Sterling is now safe and sound, but like so many in the New York and New Jersey area, could not have possibly been prepared for such severe flooding. Recovery from several feet of water could take days, or even weeks in some areas.

If there is any lesson in all this, it’s to stay put during times of crisis. Thankfully, Sterling’s friends were quick to answer the call.
