Atlanta Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies is making his return to the lineup on Friday night just days after fouling a ball off his knee.

In the initial aftermath, it was assumed Albies would need a stint on the injured list to fully recover before the postseason. For a team that’s already without Ronald Acuña for the remainder of the season, any extended absence for Albies would seem almost an unfair punishment from the baseball Gods.

Thankfully for Albies, however, there will be no placement on the IL. After missing Thursday’s opener in Colorado, the second baseman will make his return on Friday night, batting leadoff for a powerful Braves lineup as they look to take the first two games against the Rockies.

Braves could not afford long-term absence for Ozzie Albies

Initial x-rays for Albies came back negative, and he was declared day-to-day. While Brian Snitker and the Braves training staff will likely keep a watchful eye on the 24-year-old.

Albies, of course, will receive plenty of protection in the lineup, with trade deadline acquisition Jorge Soler, Freddie Freeman and Austin Riley backing him.

The Braves hold a two-game lead in the NL East over the Philadelphia Phillies.
