MLB is lucky the controversial call in the ninth inning between St. Louis and Chicago didn’t deny the Cardinals their 16th-straight win.

The St. Louis Cardinals are the hottest team in baseball, but their impressive winning streak nearly came to an end on Sunday in the worst way.

In the ninth inning, manager Mike Shildt was ejected for arguing an infield fly ruling with the umpires and the Cubs stayed alive with the tying run at second when the game should have been over.

The umpires didn’t have a good answer for nearly robbing the Cardinals

Nolan Arenado stumbled as he tried to catch a pop up. The infield fly rule was initiated when the ball dropped, but the runner at second tried to advance and was tagged out. It should have been a double play that ended the outing. Instead, the umpires ruled the runners safe and actually advanced them to third and second.

Shildt was rightly irate and the response of the umpires after the game won’t calm Cardinals fans.

“No comment,” the umpires responded to a media request for an explanation, per Derrick S. Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

However, the anger doesn’t need to linger too long as the mix up didn’t impact the final result. Ian Happ struck out and the game ended, 4-2.

St. Louis now owns a 16-game winning streak. They are now six games clear in the NL Wild Card chase.
