Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. has not had the breakout season many anticipated, and his father has noticed.

The Oklahoma Sooners are 4-0 heading into Saturday’s game against Kansas State, but they have looked beatable. They got all they could handle from Nebraska in a 23-16 win two weeks ago, and last week they escaped with a 16-13 win over West Virginia. The Heisman candidacy of quarterback Spencer Rattler has taken a hit, and the home fans in Norman chanted for his backup to play against the Mountaineers.

Sooners wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. had a nice freshman season in 2020, with 37 receptions for 610 yards and nine touchdowns. Through four games this year, he has10 catches for 193 yards and zero touchdowns. Over the last three games, he has just five catches for 76 yards. Throw out a 76-0 win over Western Carolina in the second game of the season, and Mims has four catches over the last two games.

Marvin Mims Sr. has harsh criticism of Sooners’ offense

In response to an article about his son from Sooners Wire, Marvin Mims Sr. had some brief and harsh criticism for the Sooners’ offense. He went further to say he wasn’t strictly talking about his son getting the ball more, even if the original insinuation was clear.

Mims Jr. had just two catches for 25 yards in that dismal showing by the Oklahoma offense against Baylor. He has expressed faith things will turn around as the Sooners enter the teeth of Big 12 play when asked about if his touches being down is a challenge or he’s being patient.

“It’s kind of like a mix of both. I mean, it’s a little frustrating, if I’m being honest. But at the same time, it’s more frustrating because we’re not putting up as many points as we’re used to doing.”

As much as what opposing defenses are doing, a factor in Mims’ lack of involvement through four games could be his playing in the slot more. Saturday afternoon against a Kansas State team that always seems to give Oklahoma some trouble, the sophomore star’s number of targets will be in the spotlight.
