Though their given names are spelled differently, Coby Bryant and Kobe Bryant are pronounced the same.
It is very common for the next generation to be named after popular athletes from the generation prior. That is why are there so many popular athletes named Jalen and Shaq these days or Jordan and Michael before them. Though he plays a different sport in a different part of the country, people are wondering if Cincinnati football star Coby Bryant is the son of the Los Angeles Lakers superstar. So are they related?
No, Bryant is not the son of the Lakers’ icon. He had four daughters and was every bit a girl dad.

Because Coby Bryant was born around the same time that Kobe Bryant was rising to prominence with the Lakers, it is easy to see why he has the same sounding name. The Cincinnati defensive back’s given name is spelled differently, but the surname is very common. This is similar to Detroit Pistons legend Isiah Thomas and former NBA All-Star Isaiah Thomas. He was named after him.
Even though Bryant switched out his No. 7 jersey for the No. 8 that hardwood legend wore in the second half of his Lakers career to wear in the Cotton Bowl, Kobe Bryant is not Coby Bryant’s son. This is not like Scottie Pippen and Scotty Pippen Jr. actually being a father-son combo, but with differently spelled first names. The younger Bryant is just a fan of his non-related namesake.
