The defending back-to-back AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs need some help to secure the No. 1 seed in the AFC for the playoffs.

Despite starting the season 3-4 and convincing many fans and analysts that they were done for, the Kansas City Chiefs have gone 9-1 to finish the season, locking up the AFC West and putting themselves in position for seeding in the playoffs.

By beating the Denver Broncos in their Week 18 matchup, the Chiefs have secured that they will enter the playoffs as the No. 2 seed at the lowest.

However, in order to get the No. 1 seed, they will need some help in Sunday’s NFL action.

Chiefs playoff scenarios: Titans need to lose for Kansas City to get No. 1 seed

The Titans currently hold the No. 1 seed as they hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over Kansas City. In order for the Chiefs to overtake the Titans for the top seed in the playoffs and get the sole bye on the AFC side, the Chiefs will need the Houston Texans to beat Tennessee.

On paper, this seems like a nearly impossible feat. The Texans are one of the worst teams in the league, ranking last (or close to it) in every major metric used for determining success. Thanks to the existence of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston is still ranked third in the AFC South, but that accolade comes on the back of only four wins.

However, one of those four wins happens to have come in Week 11 over the Titans. Tennessee turned the ball over five times at home, allowing the Texans to rack up a 19 point lead before scoring any points of their own. Houston put together a whopping 190 yards of offense and still managed to upset their divisional rival.

Is this game replicable? Absolutely not. However, with Derrick Henry staying on the sideline this week to rest up and a chance to end the season on a win, the Texans are not completely out of this game already.
