The USMNT did what needed to be done on Thursday, getting a draw with rival Mexico. What does that mean for the CONCACAF table and World Cup Qualifying?

The USMNT got one step closer to clinching a spot in the 2022 World Cup on Thursday night.

Facing a tough match at the Estadio Azteca against Mexico, the Americans played their southern rivals to a tough draw.

USA fans will come away feeling they came close to taking all three points — if not for a couple huge misses in front of goal — but the result is still a big one in hostile territory.

Updated CONCACAF table for World Cup Qualifying

  1. Canada 25 +13
  2. USA 22 +9
  3. Mexico 22 +6
  4. Costa Rica 19 +2
  5. Panama 18 +1
  6. El Salvador 10 -7
  7. Jamaica 8 -7
  8. Honduras 4 -17

The USMNT now sits in second place in World Cup qualifying for CONCACAF with control of their own destiny.

The top three teams qualify while the fourth-place team goes to a playoff.

USMNT next match

Next up for the USA is a game against Panama on Mar. 27. That game could ensure them a trip to Qatar.

If they win and Costa Rica draws or loses against El Salvador, the World Cup appearance will be clinched. If the Americans draw but Costa Rica loses, it’s the same result.

If they can’t get it done, it’ll come down to the final match against Costa Rica on Mar. 30.
