The Saint Peter’s Peacocks make history as they beat the No. 3 Purdue Boilermakers to advance to the Elite Eight, becoming the first 15-seed to do so.

There has never been a 15-seed in the NCAA Tournament to ever reach the Elite Eight. The furthest they have gone had been to the Sweet 16. That all changed with the presence of the 2021-22 Saint Peter’s Peacocks.

On Friday night, the Peacocks defeated the No. 3 Purdue Boilermakers 67-64 to advance to the Elite Eight.

Saint Peter’s tied things up at 57 points apiece and later took a 59-57 lead on consecutive made jump shots by Daryl Banks III. The Peacocks advanced their lead to 65-61 following three trips to the free throw line, resulting in six points scored. But Purdue was not dead just yet, as Jaden Ivey made a three-pointer with eight seconds remaining to cut their deficit to 65-54.

Ivey tried to send the game into overtime with another three-point attempt, but it bounced off the rim, giving the win and the Elite Eight berth to Saint Peter’s.

Banks finished the game with 14 points (6-for-14 from the field) and three rebounds.

Kansas advances to Elite Eight with win over Providence

Entering Friday night, there was only one No. 1 seed remaining in the entire tournament — the Kansas Jayhawks. That is still the case, as the Jayhawks defeated the No. 4 Providence Friars 66-61.

Kansas did hold a 26-17 lead over Providence entering halftime. The Friars did bounce back in the second half with 44 points scored. Yet, the Jayhawks put up 40 in the final 20 minutes to hold on and continue their run as the only top-seed remaining in the NCAA Tournament.

Jayhawks sophomore Jalen Wilson posted a double-double in the game, scoring 16 points (5-for-16 from field) and grabbing 11 rebounds.
