When is the last time Kansas won March Madness?
By Mark Powell
The Kansas basketball program is now inarguably the most elite in college basketball history, having won the most games in the sport. Can they win March Madness again?
Bill Self, Ochai Agbaji and Co. are seeking another National Title to add to Kansas’ already-impress program resume. Self himself is a Hall-of-Fame coach, and one of the best of his era.
The 59-year-old coach is well aware he’s struggled in the Elite Eight, as Kansas is just 3-7 in his career during this round. So, can the Jayhawks avoid disappointment this time around against the Miami Hurricanes?
“We’re 3-7 in my career in the Elite Eight games,” Self said Saturday. “So that’s not good enough.”
Self continued, discussing just how tough it is to make the Final Four, ranking the Elite Eight as the toughest game in the tournament to win if only due to the prospect of cutting down the nets. Suddenly, it becomes real.
“It’s the hardest game in the tournament to not win,” Self said. “You can talk about first round, you can talk about whatever, it’s the hardest game. The national championship finals, at least you’re playing for it all. But this one, every goal of every team is road to the Final Four. It’s not road to the national championship. It’s road to the Final Four.”
When is the last time Kansas basketball won March Madness?
The last time Kansas won the National Championship was in the 2007-08 season.
That year, they defeated the Memphis Tigers by a scoreline of 75-68. That Memphis team was coached by Memphis, and featured future NBA MVP Derrick Rose on the Tigers. The Kansas Jayhawks had future NBA players such as Mario Chalmers and Brandon Rush in the backcourt.
Chalmers made a memorable shot to send the game to overtime.
Truly a moment college basketball fans will never forget. Self will hope for more March magic as the tournament goes on.
