Hubert Davis has led his alma mater to the Final Four in his first season as head coach, but when did he play for North Carolina?

Hubert Davis paid his dues for years as an assistant coach at North Carolina under Roy Williams, also serving as head coach of the junior varsity team. He took over for the legendary coach this year, and Davis has led his alma mater in the Final Four. The Tar Heels will face their chief rival Duke on Saturday.

Davis was something of a legacy recruit for North Carolina as a player, following his uncle Walter Davis to Chapel Hill to play for Dean Smith. He also eventually followed his uncle to the NBA, drafted in the first round by the New York Knicks to start what would be a six-team, 12-season career.

Davis played at North Carolina from 1988-1992, in a far-away era where good college players weren’t necessarily anointed right away and most played four years.

Hubert Davis stats at UNC

Hubert Davis career stats at North Carolina: 11.8 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game; 49.5 percent from the floor, 43.5 percent from 3-point range, 81.9 percent from the line (137 games)

Davis’ role grew over his four seasons as a Tar Heel, culminating in his averaging 21.4 points per game and earning second-team All-ACC honors as a senior. He holds school records for career 3-point percentage and single season 3-point percentage (48.9 percent a a junior in 1990-91). He’s also third in school history in career free throw percentage, and one of just four players to convert 80 percent or above from the stripe in their career as a Tar Heel.

What was Hubert Davis’ record vs. Duke as a player?

Via The Daily Tar Heel, Davis was 6-5 against Duke as a player. On March 8, 1992, which was his final game against the rival Blue Devils, Davis had a career-high 35 points while going 6-for-8 from beyond the arc.

North Carolina split this year’s regular season series with Duke, including a win over the Blue Devils in Coach K’s final home game. The rubber match for the year will be a historical and high stakes one for the rivalry in the Final Four, and a win for the Tar Heels will end Mike Krzyzewski’s legendary coaching career.
