After blowing a 16-point lead in a loss to Kansas, UNC Basketball Twitter had a short yet painful message regarding the loss.

It looked to be over and as if another banner was heading to Chapel Hill. The North Carolina Tar Heels were up by 16 points at one point in the first half and up by 15 points at halftime.

Then, UNC blew a 16-point lead to Kansas, the largest blown lead in a national title game ever. It’s the type of loss that doesn’t leave you.

After the final buzzer, UNC’s basketball Twitter summed it up perfectly.

Everything that could go wrong went wrong in the second half. After a first half where everything was clicking on all cylinders, the Tar Heels sputtered in the second half, eerily similar to when they blew a 25-point lead to Baylor earlier in the tournament but narrowly escaped in overtime. This time, it wasn’t meant to be.

UNC Basketball Twitter had the proper reaction to the Tar Heels’ collapse against the Jayhawks

It’s easy to say that the semifinal victory against Duke would be considered the national championship for North Carolina and how they ended Coach K’s tenure in college basketball. But that was still a semifinal game; this was the real national title game, and Kansas now has their first title since 2008.

Everything was going so well. Caleb Love and Brady Manek were taking control and the Tar Heels lineup was making shots, blocking shots and riding high on emotion. The second half proved to be a different story, as UNC couldn’t;t withstand David McCormack, Christian Braun, and the rest of the Jayhawks’ arsenal. Losing Armando Bacot in the waning seconds didn’t help either.

It’s a bittersweet ending to a great season by the Tar Heels. They may have ended Coach K’s run in college basketball and advanced to the national championship as an 8-seed.

That won’t make the loss to Kansas sting any less, however.
