Deebo Samuel has reportedly asked for the 49ers to trade him but the star wide receiver tweeted out a response to rumors about his reasons.

After plenty of speculation that many of the NFL’s top young wide receivers were looking for big new contracts, a bombshell report was dropped on Wednesday with San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel asking for a trade.

One of the oddest aspects of the development, though, was that there weren’t really any reasons given as to why Samuel was requesting a trade. The closest we came was NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero saying on The Rich Eisen Show that Samuel was unhappy with his hybrid role as a wide receiver and running back.

However, Samuel and his camp had yet to say anything on the matter. Then, the 49ers wide receiver (for now) took to Twitter to deliver a short, pointed message about the ongoing rumors.

Samuel stated simply that “reporters” were trying to make news but that only he, the 49ers and his agent knew the whole truth of the situation. That tweet has since been deleted but remains forever thanks to screenshots.

Given the talent and production of Samuel and the integral role he played in the 49ers’ playoff run last season, it stands to reason that there will be a strong market for a trade if San Francisco obliges his request.

Regardless, though, it will be fascinating to see how things transpire and, perhaps just as much, what Samuel has to say about the matter moving forward.
