Chicago Blackhawks fans furious at team for teasing Alex DeBrincat trade on Twitter

The Chicago Blackhawks’ official Twitter account teased a big move, only for it to be the team trading star winger Alex DeBrincat to the Ottawa Senators.

The 2022 NHL Draft officially begins on Thursday, July 7. Not only will there be prospects selected by their new teams, but franchise’s will be making moves before and during the event. The Chicago Blackhawks were one of those teams to make a trade.

In the hours leading up to the Draft, the Blackhawks’ official Twitter account sent out a post to their over two million followers. The post simply had the eyeballs emojis. The fanbase was eagerly anxious awaiting to find out the meaning behind this post.

As it turns out, the Blackhawks announced in a following post, “we’re picking tonight.” They received the No. 7 overall pick from the Ottawa Senators (along with the No. 39 pick and a 2024 third-rounder). All it took was…trading 24-year-old winger Alex DeBrincat.

To say that Blackhawks fans were less than thrilled by the announcement is, well, an understatement.

As if the NHL franchise did not hear enough from their disgruntled franchise, they were handed an “L” by the official Instagram account of the city of Chicago, who commented on the team’s farewell post to DeBrincat!

There was buzz entering the NHL Draft that the Blackhawks were going to trade DeBrincat. The team is in need of a rebuild, as their moves to try to build a winning team (i.e. the eight-year, $76 million contract to Seth Jones) failed, as they finished seventh in the Central Division with a 28-42-12 record..

DeBrincat was entering the final year of his three-year, $19.2 million contract with the team, where he was set to become a restricted free agent after next season. He was coming off of a 78 points season (41 goals, 37 assists), a career-best for the winger. Through his career, DeBrincat recorded 160 goals and 147 assists.

The Blackhawks felt that the Senators’ trade offer was the adequate enough, but as you can see in the tweets above and on social media in general, they are not happy with the trade.
