Red Sox: Chris Sale barely makes up for childish clubhouse outburst

Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale is at least taking responsibility for his destructive actions in the Worcester minor league clubhouse.

Chris Sale had a meltdown in the WooSox clubhouse this week, ripping a television off the wall after a difficult performance against the Yankees AAA team.

His actions were like a “7-year-old temper tantrum.” And those are his words, not mine.

The outburst was clearly childish. On the plus side, he’s taking some action to make up for it.

According to Joe McDonald of Worcester T&G, Sale spent $6,000 on food for players and staff at the minor league affiliate. He is also replacing the TV he ripped off the wall, which was worth $1,100.

“At least Worcester got a new TV out of it,” Sale said.

Replacing the TV and treating the WooSox to a meal is the least Sale can do after his behavior. It may seem like a lot to give but Sale makes $20 million per year from the Red Sox. That means he makes something like $54,000 a day.

Max Scherzer just shelled out $7,000 to treat the Binghamton Rumble Ponies to dinner. He also gave them all AirPods. He didn’t trash their clubhouse.

Good on Sale for doing something basically decent in the aftermath but that kind of behavior shouldn’t have a place in baseball. Paying off the damages and wrapping it under the guise of “passion” isn’t the healthy way to go.

Sale should be able to afford the anger management treatment he seems to need too.
