With a brief injury at Kansas City Chiefs training camp, star quarterback Patrick Mahomes gave fans an unwarranted scare.

Any long-term injury to Mahomes would, of course, be catastrophic to Kansas City’s AFC West chances. A crowded division featuring the likes of Justin Herbert’s Chargers, Derek Carr’s Raiders and Russell Wilson’s Broncos wouldn’t look the same without Mahomes.

Around noon on Tuesday, Mahomes hobbled off the practice field, making Chiefs fans hold their collective breaths.

Thankfully, after a brief investigation, Mahomes was okay, per head coach Andy Reid.

If anything, Mahomes injury speaks to the fragility of training camp. After an entire offseason of personal care, anything can happen, even for players on a strict non-contact schedule.

With that Mahomes’ scare quickly debunked, he can focus ahead on the task at hand — winning a crowded AFC West and making another run at Super Bowl glory.

Mahomes lost his star wide receiver Tyreek Hill this past offseason, as Brett Veach deemed him replaceable. Hill was traded to the Miami Dolphins, where he promptly signed an expensive long-term contract.

KC used some of that money to sign a Hill replacement-by-committee approach, bringing in wideouts like Marquez Valdes-Scantling and JuJu Smith-Schuster. Skyy Moore and other rookie contributors could help out as well.
