Undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez faces his longtime rival Gennadiy “GGG” Golovkin. Follow along for live updates.

The calendar reflects Saturday, September 17, and we have finally arrived at the third fight between undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (57-2-2) and Gennadiy “GGG” Golovkin (42-1-1).

We are one day removed from one of the more celebrated holidays within the Mexican culture, which is Independence Day. What better way to celebrate such a significant day than having the biggest star in the sport, who happens to be Mexican, fight for all the world to see. A mob of fans tuned into the weigh-in and brought the festive feel of the holiday to the streets of the Las Vegas strip.

The 32-year-old Canelo is coming off a decision loss to WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol (20-0) in May and, instead of a rematch, has opted to take on Golovkin, who looks to be a thorn in his side. With the first fight being a draw and the second a narrow decision win, Canelo looks to silence the critics with a more definitive victory in this third bout with Golovkin. Canelo’s run at super middleweight has been stellar, but this is the score that he needs to settle to continue his historic career.

Golovkin, on the other hand, is coming into this trilogy on a four-fight win streak which was capped off by an impressive TKO victory over Ryota Murata (16-3) back in April. The difference in ages can become the difference in this fight. Golovkin is 40 years old, and although being eight years old than Canelo seems like a significant advantage for the champion, Golovkin has shown he can still punch with the younger opponents and maintain his stamina into the later rounds. But can he do it against Canelo, who is levels above the most recent opponents of Golovkin?

Is this fight going to be round 25 for both Canelo and Golovkin? Will we see either man put on a dominant performance, or will it be a throwback war? We’re close to finding out.

Canelo vs. Golovkin 3 takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV, on DAZN PPV starting at 8 p.m. ET. Expect ring walks anytime after 11 p.m ET. Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy Golovkin 3 live round-by-round updates and highlights

Round 1

FanSided Score: 10-9 Golovkin

Both men came out aggressive in the first round in different ways. Golovkin established his jab right away while Canelo lunged a bit but was throwing punches with bad intentions. The Golovkin jab was more effective than the Canelo pressure.

Round 2

FanSided Score: 10-9 Canelo

Canelo settled down a bit and started to land those looping shots to the shoulders, arm and head of Golovkin which is what he normally does to wear down his opponents. The left hook of Canelo was the difference in this round.

Round 3

FanSided Score: 10-9 Canelo

Canelo picked up the pace in this round and landed a quick one-two combination that made Golovkin take a few steps back. Golovkin didn’t seem to have an answer for Canelo’s pressure.

Round 4

FanSided Score: 10-9 Canelo

Although Golovkin is trying to land something significant, its the younger Canelo who is landing combinations that are making him think throughout the round. Canelo’s left hook is starting to find a home on the chin of Golovkin.

Round 5

FanSided Score: 10-9 Canelo

Canelo landed some big overhand rights in this round which made Golovkin react in a bad way. Canelo is starting to land those vintage looping shots at will.

Round 6

FanSided Score: 10-9 Canelo

It seems like the speed of Canelo at this stage of his career is just too much for Golovkin as he has been hesitant to throw any power punches in fear that he will be countered. Canelo continues to land but in small instances, Golovkin does land some clean uppercuts.

Round 7

FanSided Score: 10-9 Canelo

Canelo continues to flick that left jab to then follow it up with the looping right hook or straight right hand. Golovkin seems to be frustrated as he cannot see all of the Canelo combinations coming to him.

Round 8

FanSided Score: 10-9 Canelo

Golovkin started to increase his volume this round and landed some of those vintage looping shots to the top of the head. Canelo weathered the storm and came right back with a left hook making Golovkin hesitant towards the end of the round.

Round 9

FanSided Score: 10-9 Golovkin

Golovkin found his second wind and when he landed a hard left jab which staggered Canelo a bit, Golovkin started to carefully pour it on. Canelo seemed like he was a little hurt and trying to avoid getting hit with something big.

Round 10

FanSided Score: 10-9 Golovkin

It seemed as if Canelo took this round off as he wasn’t throwing as many punches as he was in previous rounds. Golovkin took advantage of that by landing some hard vintage left jabs which made Canelo readjust his defense.

Round 11

FanSided Score: 10-9 Canelo

Although Canelo has a small cut on his right eye, he was still applying pressure to the 40 year old Golovkin. Towards the end of the round, Golovkin tried to assert his jab but it was just too little, too late.

Round 12

FanSided Score: 10-9 Canelo

There was a lot of holding by Golovkin but down the stretch, Canelo did just enough to win the round and more importantly, seal the victory.

FanSided Final Result: 117-111 Canelo

FINAL RESULTS: 116-112, 115-113, 115-113 for Saul “Canelo” Alvarez

We had it a little wider for Canelo but the right fighter won this evening. Canelo remains the undisputed super middleweight champion of the world. The real question is going to be, who is next for Canelo?
