Twitter reacts to Canelo Alvarez winning boring trilogy bout with Gennadiy Golovkin

Everyone in the boxing community seemed to have the same feeling: Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy Golovkin 3 was a huge, lacklusting, disappointment of a bout and the judges’ scores were awful

There was no question this time who won the fight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin — but it was also the most one-sided and easily the most boring and disappointing.

Alvarez earned an easy unanimous decision over GGG to retain his undisputed super middleweight championship.

The opening round between the two was fairly quiet, though Alvarez showed a sense of production by working the jab. And that proved to be the story for the first half of the fight. Alvarez focused on jabs and straights to the head for six rounds, leading the dance. Golovkin, meanwhile, seemed unable to do anything to answer back.

Golovkin attempted to stand and trade with Alvarez in the pocket in round seven, but Alvarez moved around the ring and started to work over Golovkin’s body.

Golovkin finally started to back Alvarez up in the ninth round, but it was too late and Alvarez answered right back.

And yet, while Alvarez walked away with the victory, the scorecards read 116-112 and 115-113 (x2), implying the fight was as close as their previous two.

This third meeting between Alvarez and Golovkin looked to settle a score that didn’t seem finished after their first two encounters.

Their first meeting in September 2017 for most of boxing’s middleweight titles was a highly competitive and close bout, one that ended in a controversial split draw. The fight is known for the infamous 118-110 Canelo scorecard dealt out by Adalaide Byrd.

Their WBA (Super) and WBC middleweight title rematch held one year later, regarded as arguably the best boxing fight of 2018, saw Alvarez win a narrow majority decision to win both titles and hand Golovkin his first loss in professional boxing.

Since their second fight, Alvarez racked up more gold in more weight classes, defeating the likes of Rocky Fielding, Callum Smith, Avni Yildirim, Billy Joe Saunders and Caleb Plant to become the undisputed super middleweight champion.

Alvarez also tried his hand at light heavyweight, defeating Sergey Kovalev in November 2019 for the WBO light heavyweight title but losing a WBA title fight with Dmitry Bivol — which was only Alvarez’s second loss in boxing.

Alvarez’s sole fight at middleweight since the second fight with GGG came in May 2019, where he defeated Daniel Jacobs to retain his WBA and WBC titles and win the IBF middleweight title.

Golovkin knocked out Steve Rolls in June 2019 before claiming the IBF middleweight title, vacated by Alvarez, in October 2019 with a controversial decision win over Sergiy Derevyanchenko. GGG has not fought much since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, but he retained the IBF middleweight title against Kamil Szeremeta before stopping Ryota Murata to win the WBA (Super) super middleweight title.
