Find out the last time the TCU Horned Frogs won the national championship and who they are playing upon their return.

The TCU Horned Frogs (12-1) might just be the biggest story in college football, as they have taken the Big 12 by storm. Entering the national championship, TCU will look to end Georgia’s (13-0) quest for a repeat in the College Football Playoff National Championship beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT in Los Angeles, airing across the ESPN family of networks.

While they have produced eight-plus-win seasons in the past, this team looks to be extra special. Led by Sonny Dykes, Heisman finalist Max Duggan has propelled the Horned Frogs to the No. 3 ranking in the nation while averaging 250+ passing yards per game, complimented by the five touchdowns from wideout Quentin Johnson.

But outside the Xs and Os comes the historical significance of a potential upset win for a program. A program that just one year ago, had no identity and missed out on a bowl berth at 5-7.

TCU national championship wins: When was the Horned Frogs’ last title?

To even think of getting to this game in 2021-22 was a dream, but now, nine days into 2023, America will watch the Big 12’s biggest surprise team, TCU, try and win a national title for the first time since 1938. That’s right, television did not even exist back then.

TCU’s lone loss came in the Big 12 Championship game to Kansas State, falling in an instant overtime classic to the Wildcats, 31-28.

The Horned Frogs managed to break Big Ten fans hearts with a colossal win in the College Football Playoff semifinal, holding off a double-digit Michigan rally to win 51-45 in a game that media members and college football consumers won’t soon forget.

For now, though, earning a title on the grandest stage could do wonders for a program that, in all likelihood, will look to keep the tradition and spirit of the Big 12 alive for just a little longer.
