Patrick Mahomes already has his post-NFL career plans lined up

Patrick Mahomes is on track to go down as one of the greatest NFL quarterbacks ever. But the Chiefs superstar has post-playing career plans as well.

Once 60 minutes of play have concluded in Glendale on Sunday, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes could have another bullet point on an already-loaded resumé as he’s looking to become a two-time Super Bowl champion.

It’s truly remarkable what Mahomes has accomplished in just five years as the starter in Kansas City. Yes, there’s one Super Bowl win to his credit. But this is also his third appearance in the Big Game and he boasts an unreal 64-16 record as a starter, has put up ridiculous numbers, and is still only 27 years old with a long career ahead.

Despite that, Mahomes already has eyes on what’s next when he hangs up his cleats. During a Chiefs media session on Tuesday for the Super Bowl, the potential MVP-winner from this season made note that he could see himself as an NFL general manager when he’s done playing. He added that evaluating incoming rookies is something he already loves.

To varying degrees of success historically, Patrick Mahomes certainly wouldn’t be the first NFL players turned NFL GM, nor would he even be the first quarterback to take that path as guys like John Elway have had heavy involvement in NFL front offices.

With that said, Mahomes would be a fascinating case as a general manager, particularly when it came to the draft evaluation he already enjoys. After all, he was selected after Mitchell Trubisky in the 2017 NFL Draft — eight picks after, to be exact — with the Chiefs having to trade up to No. 10 to draft him. A big reason for that was his raw, toolsy perception coming out of Texas Tech. We see how well that’s worked out for Kansas City to take such a perceived “project” in the draft.

Of course, a post-playing career Patrick Mahomes seems like a far-off notion at this point. Sure, he might not be a mid-40s star a la Tom Brady. However, it would be safe to say he has roughly a decade left putting on the pads, at minimum. But it’s at least good to know that Mahomes has eyes on what’s after football, and it’s an act off the field that should be fun to see — though perhaps not as fun as watching what he pulls off on it.
